Yorkshire Water - Top Five Tips to Avoid the Frost
Before a cold snap
Wrap up warm – make sure your pipework, cisterns, tanks and water meters in unheated areas feel the benefit by wrapping them in waterproof foam lagging or insulation.
Know where your stop tap is – in case you need to turn off your water supply quickly – it's usually under the kitchen sink.
During a cold snap
Keep your home heated – set your central heating on a constant low temperature. If you're away on holiday, remember to tell someone and give them a key so they can pop in to make sure you haven't had a burst pipe.
After a cold snap
Frozen external pipe? If you think your pipes are frozen, try defrosing them gently with a hairdryer or fan heater. Never use a naked flame.
No water? If your neighbours are fine it could be a problem with your private pipes. Check out our website for lots of advice and checks you can make.
